Tomaž Nabergoj (Narodni muzej Slovenije, Ljubljana)
The Ljubljanica river and its archaeological legacy from the Medieval and Early Modern Period
The Ljubljanica river was an important communication route in central Slovenia from prehistory onwards. The National museum of Slovenia has more than 6000 river finds from all periods, many of them from Medieval and Early Modern Era. The river played a special role for the medieval town of Ljubljana, besides being a waterway, it served as a source of water and food as well as of energy and drainage for various crafts. Archaeological finds, such as fishing gear, pottery, table knives, agricultural tools, arrowheads for hunting etc. document activities connected to the river and nearby marshes. The finds also consist of weaponry, including swords, combat knives, spearheads, arrowheads, and pole arms, as well as equestrian and horse gear. We will present various topics, related to interpretations of river finds: stratigraphy and spatial distribution of objects, landscape networks, long term phenomena and reasons for the deposition of objects, also in relation to written sources.
Tomaž Nabergoj (1965) studied archaeology and history at the University of Ljubljana. His PhD was on medieval arms and armour from the Ljubljanica. From 1995 he has been working in the National museum of Slovenia in Ljubljana as a curator for the archaeology of High and Late Middle Ages. He was co-author of various temporary exhibitions, e.g. on water-finds and cultural history of the Ljubljanica river (2009), and on chivalry in the Slovenian lands (2012), as well as of a permanent archaeological exhibition on Middle Ages (2016). Currently he is working on an exhibition on deserted medieval urban settlement Gutenwerd.
